The pre-season ended last night with a 2-2 draw as Villa came from behind against FC Groningen of Holland.

Luke Moore and Liam Ridgewell were our scorers.

Martin O’Neill told the official site: ‘We came from behind twice and I think that shows strong character. I don’t think I can fault the players for their attitude and the commitment has impressed me all week. We know we’re lacking a bit of quality in certain areas and that’s up to me to sort out, but I’m happy with the work the players have put in this week.’

‘We’ve played three tricky games and that’s the sort of workout you want pre-season. It’s all well and good playing lesser teams and thrashing them, but how much of a preparation is that?’ ‘We have to work on the manner of the goals conceded. There’s nothing more frustrating than having a good spell of possession and then conceding a soft goal from a set-piece. That appears to have been a problem for a while and it won’t be sorted overnight. But we have to work hard at it and that’s something I can promise we will do.’

‘It’s been a useful trip. It’s hard to think I’ve only been in the job a week, it’s been so hectic. Now we’ve got an important week in training before the start of the season.’

Then we face a nice easy away game against Arsenal, no problem!
