The pre-season ended last night with a 2-2 draw as Villa came from behind against FC Groningen of Holland.

Luke Moore and Liam Ridgewell were our scorers.

Martin O’Neill told the official site: ‘We came from behind twice and I think that shows strong character. I don’t think I can fault the players for their attitude and the commitment has impressed me all week. We know we’re lacking a bit of quality in certain areas and that’s up to me to sort out, but I’m happy with the work the players have put in this week.’

‘We’ve played three tricky games and that’s the sort of workout you want pre-season. It’s all well and good playing lesser teams and thrashing them, but how much of a preparation is that?’ ‘We have to work on the manner of the goals conceded. There’s nothing more frustrating than having a good spell of possession and then conceding a soft goal from a set-piece. That appears to have been a problem for a while and it won’t be sorted overnight. But we have to work hard at it and that’s something I can promise we will do.’

‘It’s been a useful trip. It’s hard to think I’ve only been in the job a week, it’s been so hectic. Now we’ve got an important week in training before the start of the season.’

Then we face a nice easy away game against Arsenal, no problem!

  • It seems to have been a Villa problem for maybe 3 or 4 years now that we keep conceding very silly goals and are rubbish at defending set pieces. Hopefully O’Neill can sort tis out once and for all even if it means new players being brought in.

  • Would like to see Mellberg & Laursen at the back at Arsenal we will need the experience against that lot. I think we are capable of getting a draw if they stay focused for 90 minutes and don¬ít lose concentration.

  • Would like to see cahill & mellberg start against the gooners, dont think laursen will be fit enough for 90 mins as yet and i think cahill is pure quality and deserves his chance,id have cahill any day of the week instead of ridgewell like. One things for

  • Impressive looking result to wind up the tour. A similar result against Arsenal next weekend would be very welcome.
