Martin O’Neill is happy to have grabbed Richard Dunne from Manchester City and James Collins from West Ham believing both to be top signings.

He said on the official site: ‘It’s just great to get them in. I think it gives everybody a boost around the football club and hopefully they stay injury-free and are ready to go.’

He says Dunney has an established ‘pedigree’ and on Collins he explained: ‘Recently when we were looking around to try and improve that position I had an opportunity to see him a couple of times at West Ham. I went and saw West Ham against Tottenham and he did fine. Last week I went up again to watch them play Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park and I thought he coped with most things again. I just think for value for money, if he stays fit, he’ll be an excellent acquisition.’

Meanwhile Dunne isn’t impressed the way that Man £ity dealt with his exit. He told the Daily Mail that he is far from impressed with City executive chairman Gary Cook who ‘doesn’t understand the core loyalty of the club and where it begins.’

He also said ‘City have just signed Joleon Lescott and he’s getting dog’s abuse for being disloyal and breaking a contract he signed at Everton a year ago. But City have just done the exact same to me. It’s not me who asked to leave. I would quite happily have stayed there and been part of the squad and fought for my place. I have been loyal to them for a long time but it was their decision to cancel a four-year contract.’

He also calls the contracts given ‘pointless’ …. wish someone would give me one of those pointless contracts though, better than what I pay myself for sure!

And on Villa he is hoping to help push us to fourth with our young squad who he says should have confidence from last years close run for the Champions League places.

Looking forward to seeing Dunne play and see what sort of partnership he can forge, big boots to fill now he has the Number 5 shirt worn by God and Laursen!

Vital Villa asked, in a poll suggested by PJVilla:

Who should our first choice centre backs be now?

Cuellar & Dunne 51%, which is just as well as Davies looks like he could be out for a few months as MON says it is looking ‘more and more likely’ that he’ll need surgery on his shoulder problem.

Other results:

Davies & Dunne 28%
Unsure, let MON have that headache! 9%
Cuellar & Davies 8%
Collins & Dunne 3%
Davies & Collins 1%
Collins & Cuellar 0%
