Alex McLeish has described tonight’s loss to Bolton as a kick in the guts, blaming some woeful defending and our inability to put the ball in the back of the net.

Speaking to the Official Site after the game, without a mention of our worst ever home season, Eck said:

‘Unfortunately we spurned a few chances in the first half when we had a good performance. To see it turning like that was horrible, it was a kick in the guts. We have to rally the troops and prepare them for the nest game, there are nine points to play for. It’s still in our hands but I believe in the players and believe they will be in the Premier League next season.’

McLeish also called on the supporters to stick with the team for the final three games:

‘They can have the power to galvanise the players and I thought they were excellent tonight and it just turned. I couldn’t say I didn’t expect that to happen, but they love Aston Villa and they have got to show their love for the club and give the players the power to get the extra energy to fight these challenges coming up.’

The fans were great tonight, as ever, when the team gives us something to get behind there isn’t a problem…but why oh why can we never perform in the second half. What changes?

Eck only knows!

Bolton Match Thread – warning, at about 62 minutes into the game it gets very depressing.

So to cheer you all up, have my favourite Eck photo:
