Doug Ellis, Villa’s outgoing chairman, says that Martin O’Neill could be at Villa for ‘a lifetime’.

Doug told Sky Sports News:

‘I’m delighted. I’m convinced he could be there for a lifetime, not just for the rolling one-year contract – that means nothing, we’ve been through all that. He is a very passionate man, a great motivator and the success he’s had is there to be seen. In five years at Leicester, you see what happened there. He won cups and got them promoted. He went to Celtic and, at that time, Rangers were the absolute kings in Scotland. He turned that over and got in to the Champions League.’

‘All in all, he is now an Aston Villa man through and through. I’m delighted to have him, and delighted to have him for the supporters. I say it again a thousand times, the supporters are the most important ingredient in football.’

😮

He also says the reception for O’Neill was great, ‘What a job to even get in the door! For me it was very satisfying as 100 percent of all the people there were patting me on the back, saying ‘thanks very much chairman, great job’, which is a bit of a change.’

Hmmm, not sure about the 100% part, the Ellis Out chants were there and USA, USA, USA was also sung. Still, whoever convinced O’Neill to come to Villa Park, it is a major coup and our latest poll shows exactly what the fans think of his arrival.

We asked if Martin O’Neill was the right man for the job, 97% said ‘Stupid question, of-course he is!’, 2% were unsure and just 1% said no!

Our latest poll asks what Martin O’Neill can achieve this season, as suggested by AV White.
