Following the arrival of former Arsenal manager Unai Emery as Steven Gerrard’s replacement back in October, plenty of Aston Villa fans were expecting a slightly busy January transfer window as he seized his first chance to tweak the first team group he had inherited.

A few days back we saw Academy graduate Tyriek Wright recalled from his loan spell out with Bradford City, and he departed on a permanent deal for Plymouth Argyle, and earlier on Wednesday, the club confirmed the speculation linking us with a move for Spanish left back Alex Moreno.

The defender joins the club after having had a decent spell with Real Betis in La Liga, and he helped them lift the Copa del Rey in the 2021/22 campaign. The 29-year-old has also featured for Mallorca, Elche and Rayo Vallecano during his career, and whilst predominantly an attacking left back, he can also play left wing.

Speaking to the Official Site to confirm his arrival, Emery said of the player.

“Álex is a good player that can help our squad. He has been one of the top left-backs in La Liga over the past few seasons and we are delighted to have him here.”

Moreno’s transfer will not be completed in time for him to debut against Leeds United on Friday, as his deal remains subject to international clearance and receipt of a successful visa.

We obviously expect no issues on that front as he’s also already been handed the No 15 shirt for the remainder of this campaign. It’s believed we have paid £13.2 million for him, but as is now usual, I can find no mention of a contract length.
