Everton To Serve As Our Turning Point Again

Martin O’Neill is calling on the squad to reignite our season this Sunday just like we did on April 2nd in his first season with us.

Speaking on the official site ahead of the crunch clash O’Neill reminised back to 2007, almost to the game where he says he fell in love with this club and the moment he not only learnt a hell of a lot about the team, but to the moment he was admamant he wanted to push us forward.

‘In the first half against Everton, we were just wretched for every reason under the sun. The crowd booed us off and everything we got at half-time that evening, we thoroughly deserved.

‘The team could have wilted under that pressure and ended up being in deep, deep trouble but they went out and showed their battling qualities and their character.

‘There was a genuine desire and we came rolling back from a position of despair. That showed something about the team that really pleased me.

‘I learned a lot about them that night, and also about the crowd, who had been sharing our frustration for some considerable time.

‘If ever there was an evening where I felt ‘this is a club worth doing something for’ that was it. It was encapsulated in a 90-minute period where we were getting the crowd’s utter wrath in the first half but were applauded off at the end.’

Stark comparison to Moscow as that’s back in the news today, but maybe that has been the problem and those of us who have speculated O’Neill has basically done a JG and has started caring about losing league games more than willing them have a point.

He wants success that bad it’s counted against him and the team and it would explain our recent dire performances and failure to live up to our own hype of attractive counter attacking football.

That hopefully changed against Man U when we were definitely back to our best, with a balanced squad, and playing good flowing football. Everton won’t be the same sort of game but 3 points would certainly kickstart us results wise.
