Martin O’Neill has told Celtic fans, in an exclusive report by Mark Guidi, that he regrets having to leave the Scottish giants.

‘God knows how long I’d have stayed had it not been for other circumstances. But I’m glad to be back in the game. It’s been 15 months and at times it has felt more like 15 years.’

He says that if not for his wife’s illness he would still be at Celtic adding: ‘I don’t think my outlook in terms of football has changed and never will. But in terms of life I have a different perspective now, different priorities. Don’t get me wrong, football is of vital consequence to me but you do get a different outlook.’

However he promises, ‘I’ll still be the same man in the dugout and on the touchline.’ Great news as I sit right by the dug out and after the last dour chap, we could do with some fun!!

He carried on: ‘I will be judged winning games and I want to bring some decent days back to Villa. I want to do it with panache and excitement. They are a great club with great history and tradition. Every club feels they deserve to be up there with the best but Villa should be. Those were heady days in the early 80s when they won the title and European Cup with a wonderful team. And it’s something to aspire to. Given time I think I can turn it around.’

He also says about working with Doug, ‘I have no apprehensions – it will be an experience along the way.’ Not sure how long an experience though?!

Excitement back at Villa Park? It might just catch on you know?!
