It’s not unfair to say that the reported £1million signing of former Republic of Ireland international Glenn Whelan from Stoke City back in the summer of 2017 saw quite a few Aston Villa fans raise their eyebrows.
The 35-year-old was well liked at Stoke for his efforts across his many years with them but Villa fans were mixed when it came to his performance levels with us. With the final regular Championship action now over following our defeat to Norwich City last Sunday, Whelan’s turnaround in form following the arrival of head coach Dean Smith has been remarkable to say the least and in the last few months, he’s quickly become a fan favourite for his determined attitude.
With the players enjoying their lap of appreciation following the Norwich game, it seems Villa fans themselves have had quite an impact on the Whelan household, as his wife took to social media to lavish praise on us.

With a number of fans calling for a 12 month deal, whether that happens is down to the club and he is due to leave this summer when his existing contract expires. Whatever happens though, it’s been a hell of a year for Whelan and he deserves every bit of praise he’s been getting.
