Following late success over Burton Albion, Aston Villa got their Premier League 2020/21 campaign underway with a decent victory over Sheffield United and we were looking to make it three from three as we returned to EFL Cup action this evening – travelling to Bristol City in the Third Round.
Head coach Dean Smith certainly shuffled the pack, bringing in Jed Steer, Fred Guilbert and we saw Jacob Ramsey once again – there was also a debut for summer capture Bertrand Traore.
Despite the changes, it was a lovely bright start and in the 11th minute Anwar El Ghazi gave us the advantage and that was quickly built on by Traore who netted a debut goal to make it 2-0.
We were largely cruising and Keinan Davis, in particular, should’ve extended our lead ahead of the break. There was also a clear shout for a foul on Ramsey in the penalty box that was ignored.
It was a quieter second half and we seemed to take our foot off the peddle, but three minutes after coming on as substitutes Trezeguet lined up Ollie Watkins and 3-0 it was.
We should’ve scored a couple more and I won’t talk about the referee, but good decent win with a good few promising displays from others.
That made for a good Thursday night!
