Following on from Jack Grealish’s £100million transfer to Manchester City, Aston Villa head coach Dean Smith was on the look out for a new skipper as we go into today’s Premier League opener with Watford.
Picking a new captain wasn’t going to be a tricky affair for Smith in reality, ‘won’t be named twice’ led by example given his style of play, but the real organiser and voice in the camp has always been Tyrone Mings in the heart of our defence and he was ably backed up by John ‘Meatball’ McGinn.
This season we had additional options as well in the shape of Emi Martinez, and even the returning Ashley Young, given the experience he now boasts following his time at Manchester United and Inter Milan.
Predictably, and rightly, ahead of kick off, Mings was given the armband and few will disagree.
