That was the ultimate question posed to starlet Shane Lowry as he had to make his final choice on who to represent internationally.

Lowry is Perth borne, but represented Eire at U17 and U21 levels, winning two caps for the U21 side, but has recently decided that his allegiance will lie with Australia as he progresses his career.

Rules state that a player can change their mind up until the age of 21, so long as they haven’t represented the full national side, so Lowry was well within his rights to make this decision, and the Football Association of Ireland have said they harbour no ill will to the player after his decision.

Speaking to SSN, a FAI spokesperson said:

‘The decision is entirely up to the player.

‘Players have gone the other way in the past and declared for us. So it’s a case that we’ve benefited from it in the past.’

Unfortunately I can’t find any direct quotes from Lowry on the issue but no doubt I’ll find some eventually.
