It’s been quite a busy day at Aston Villa and we have had four players depart Bodymoor Heath for loan spells at various levels around the country.

The most notable was Matt Targett’s largely unexpected switch out to Newcastle United. The 26-year-old has made 19 appearances for us so far this season, but his future was in some doubt following the capture of Lucas Digne from Everton earlier this month.

Fans will have their own opinions about us helping to strengthen Newcastle, but fair play to Targett as he clearly wants the game time. We’ll have to see what happens here come the summer as there’s no talk of a buy clause and you have to assume Ash Young will be off over the summer, but if Steven Gerrard prefers Digne, you’d have to think the club would be thinking ahead here.

Following on from his very successful loan spell out with Swindon Town in the first half of the 2021/22 campaign, academy graduate Kaine Kesler Hayden also headed back out for a spell with League One side MK Dons.

Having made 21 appearances for League Two Swindon and seriously impressing their fans, the 19-year-old right back heads out to test himself at a higher level now for the remainder of the season and will be looking to get himself involved in their push for promotion as they currently sit in fourth place in the table.

It should be another good spell for the youngster as he tests himself at a slightly higher level and it’ll be all eyes to next Saturday as he could potentially make his debut for them as they face Lincoln City.

KKH wasn’t the only departure from the club today, we also saw Jed The Stare head out for a loan spell with Luton Town. The 29-year-old has three appearances to his name this year, and should significantly improve his game time at Kenilworth Road.

Fellow young goalkeeper Filip Marschall also departed for a spell out with National League North side Gateshead.

The 18-year-old has 10 PL2 appearances to his name this season, and made his England Under 19 debut back in September. Gateshead sit at the top of their table, so again, it should be a decent spell for him and an opportunity to impress.
