Loads of press talk from Gareth Barry with quotes galore but I must admit, now he isn’t a Villa player, I’ve lost interest. He’s gone, that is that.

The Mirror have repeated the link to Spurs 26-year-old midfielder Jermaine Jenas. Basically ‘Arry is looking for a summer clear out and as we’ve sold a midfielder, we are being linked to all and sundry!

Other reports say that Martin O’Neill wants Middlesbrough’s defender David Wheater. the Star and the Daily Express cover this story and suggest that there will be competition for the player from Bolton, Arsenal and West Ham. They also say that we are prepared to use Marlon Harewood as part of the deal for the 22-year-old England-U21 player.

Apparently he is rated at £8million.

The Evening Gazette says they have been told a move for Harewood is ‘highly unlikely’.

Another report says we’ve lost the race for Ajax’s Thomas Vermaelen who will go to Arsenal instead.

We’ve been linked with 30-year-old Newcastle midfielder Damien Duff again. Yawn!

The Daily Mail say that Manchester United, Everton and Aston Villa all want 20-year-old Sheffield United fullback Kyle Naughton. The report claims Everton will make the first move.

Hull City apparently want Marlon Harewood and have held initial talks according to the Daily Mail.

And that, today, appears to be that for transfer gossip. Comes to something when even the rumours are boring doesn’t it? This is usually the most exciting part!

  • Wonder what sidwell will make of it if huddlestone joins,If he wasn`t happy to sit on the chelsea bench he isn`t going to stay at villa.

  • I think if we sign owen it is a good deal and will show intent going forward. I also think we need to sign players of quality and Duff is now a good sqad player if we could sign him and huddlestone/Jenas. We can focus on the defence, it seems we always late to start, I would have to question MON (who I love) Is away at the start of the window?

  • Well I think the Barry interview is important to us even if he is no longer a Villa player. It shows that our poor form for the last 3rd was the deciding factor! I hope that our current poor form doesn’t put any potential signings off us too! It would definitely up our profile if Owen were to be the first signing! I hope so, and then maybe more will follow!

  • Looks like we can invoke a bidding war between Hull and ‘boro for the one with the never-ending forehead, Marlon. Shame that he didn’t get much time this year after some amazing sub appearances the previous one but we could probably fit 2 players on the bench instead of him and MON obviously doesn’t rate him or they’ve fallen out so the quicker its done the better and we can intice a new number 9 in aswell.

  • Much rather have him go to Boro as part of a deal to bring Wheater, Tuncay, Johson or Downing to the club. However, I wouldnt say no to Turner or Dawson from Hull – but they may cost a lot more. £5m+Harewood for Wheater or £7m+Harewood for Tuncay. Or better yet, the Barry money+Harewood for both of them!!

  • If we sign huddlestone to play with petrov we cant play 4-4-2 it would be even worse than a petrov and barry combo. Not that any of them are bad players but they havent got the energy to get up and down the pitch, track midfielders and get the tackles in. Thats where we fell apart last year and it was the defence who got the stick even though they were hoplessly exposed half the time. NRC also gets stick but you need that kind of nuisance in your team when there’s not a lot of mobility in the centre. cant see us going back to 3 though as that would mean leaving 2 strikers out.

  • Huddlestone is AWFUL off the ball, and can’t tackle, and for someone that is a defensive midfielder, it’s not exactly good. Bazza.

  • All the top teams play with 3 in the middle “themightyatom” and can’t understand why MON persists with 2 up front especially when it was working with just 1. Carew has been in undroppable form, Gabby gives us a nuisance and in turn creates space for the rest and Heskey is for some reason just undroppable, or if he doesn’t start then he’ll get the last 15-20 mins regardless of the score ala Beckham for the national squad.

  • villan444 – spot on. thats why if we buy huddlestone were gonna struggle with two in the middle. only rumours in any case and he’d still be a good squad addition.
