Having put all our defensive eggs in one basket on deadline day and subsequently failed to notice Harold Moukoudi wasn’t that sold on a move to the club given it appeared the 20-year-old French Ligue 2 player was our top target, we also failed to add Aberdeen’s Scott McKenna late on as they rejected us.

Having already let Tommy Elphick leave, it’s very much been silly season in the press ever since.

Endless stories about John Terry, endless defensive links and conversations about whether we should try Jack Grealish there (fair enough an exaggeration) in place of Mile Jedinak and now we finally seemed to have stumbled across on-loan Manchester United’s Axel Tuanzebe being played in his more accepted correct position, we are now being loosely linked with a move for Stephen Caulker.

I have no idea whether this is London media eeking out the last remnants of the rumour mill or not – and yes, if Caulker could demonstrate he was back to his early potential it’s possibly not a bad move – I’m not specifically against the player.

I just still fail to see how we seemed to walk into this position with our eyes wide open.

I’m not keeping a list, but I’m sure the only two lads we haven’t yet been linked with are Paul McGrath and Shaun Teale.
