He knows we have dropped too many points already this season, and the New Year needs to see far more 3 point matches if we are to get into Europe. Against Wigan, he knows not even a draw would’ve been enough:

‘If we want to get into Europe, these are the sorts of places we have to come to and win.

‘I don’t think even a draw would have been good enough. The lads were aware of that and we worked hard to get the result.’

Like in so many other games this season, the team of two halves did wake up, but Gabby also knows our consistency needs to be addressed and we can’t rely on one good 45 minute spell a match if we expect to win things:

‘It was a disappointing performance in the first half and we were really unhappy to concede the goal – particularly from a set-piece. But we dug deep after the break to pick up the points.

‘The pitch had loads of bobbles and the grass and turf was coming up and in the second half there was a horrendous wind. Conditions were hard but we did well to get out with a win.’

In my mind though the pitch can never be blamed, it’s the same for both teams and however unPremiership like a pitch of that state is, teams need to work round it.
