Gabby Agbonlahor has spoken of the competition for places we have upfront now, and also that he hopes our recent results have silenced some of the pre season doubters.

Speaking to the Official Site Gabby spoke initially of his desire to stay in the team, and the battle he faces for the spot:

‘We’ve got Darren and he’s a great striker, Christian is a really good player and he brings something that we have been missing. Andi and Jordan have been doing well. It will be tough to get a place in the side but all I can do is my best. For me it’s more about looking at my own game and trying to get myself fit and playing like I can, trying to stay in the side and I know it’ll be tough, but that’s my aim.’

Gabby also acknowledged that every time we lose the pundits will have us as favourites for the drop, but he thinks, especially the City result, should have silenced a lot of our doubters as the team is only going to get better in time:

‘Every time we lose I think people do think we are favourites to go down. They say this and that, but obviously it’s confidence for the team for us to go to Man City and get that result. We’ve just got to take it game to game and see what happens. The squad is young, everyone is fighting for places and anyone who doesn’t make it into the team will be disappointed and that’s a good thing for us.’

We certainly aren’t going to see the best of us until at least December when everybody will have bedded into the new tactics and gelled with one another fully, so we can expect plenty of blips along the way, but as long as the players are giving their all and we have positives to take from the losses all should be well.
