No, it’s not Garlic Bread, it’s Gary Gardner whot’s the future if you listen to Stephen Ireland.

The Birmingham Mail carry a few quotes from the midfielder concerning his younger colleagues, and here’s what he had to say.

‘There are a few players coming through and Gary Gardner is one of those. A lot of them have ability and it’s up to them when they get their chance to try to keep the shirt. I think the future looks bright with these guys. Gary is a good player and since he’s broken through he’s worked really hard in training and been impressive. It’s up to him now, he could be in the centre of Villa’s midfield for the next ten to 12 years.’

Whilst it’s good to see the seniors talking up the youngsters, let’s remember to not put too much pressure on them. In relative terms due to his injury, Gardner is still playing catch up and as we saw from his performances last season, whilst he’s good enough to play a part, he’s not the finished deal yet and he’s not ready yet in terms of experience to live up to the expectations many have of him.

A good season this term will probably be in the region of 20 starts for him, but there’s no doubt we won’t see the best he can offer for another year or two, so let him catch up on that experience before putting more pressure on his shoulders.
