Gareth Barry has been given a late call up to the England squad after Gary Neville was forced to withdraw after picking up an ankle injury playing in Everton’s 4-1 win over Bolton at the weekend.

Barry might now get a chance to add to his nine caps in the Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Andorra as Ashley Cole is suspended and Wayne Bridge is also out. Still, no doubt knowing Steve McClaren Jamie Carragher will be played at left-back instead!

  • Delighted for Barry, should be a squad regular. However its pretty obvious that Cara will get the nod. But, seeing as we are playing Israel and Andorra, England’s defence should be able to handle the other teams offensive play, therefore what Barry lacks in defensive quality (which isn?t much due to his legendry status) he should be more than able to help Gerrard attack the left flank. Fingers crossed, hopefully we’ll get to see Barry shine in an England shirt.

  • I’ve said this before in jest, but I am deadly serious now… if I was Gareth Barry I would tell Steve Mclaren to stick his call up up his arse!

  • Yep have to agree with my namesake (but I have a full stop between deano and villa!!) Barry should tell McClaren to shove it. If he isnt even considered 3rd choice left back!! – Im all for playing players in club positions – but P. Neville has played midfield all year. At least Barry has played there this season!!

  • Oh and for what its worth as an outsider looking in (N. Ireland fan) my first XI for England assuming all players fit would be unlike the England team picked by the England coaching staff: Robinson – G.Neville Terry Ferdinand Bridge – Lennon Gerrard Huddlestone Barry – Rooney Ashton. SUBS – Foster, Carragher, Hargreaves, Lampard, Owen. But then I suppose thats why I am a teacher and not an England manager!!

  • What’s the point of calling him up..we all know the ginga ninja has no intention of playing him!

  • Its about time steve got him i nthe squad now all McMuppet needs to do is drop someone who he is good friends with

  • It is now to early (or to late depending on how you view it) to start the McMuppet out campaign. He really is the most uninspiring manager England have ever had the misfortune to have. Somebody at the FA should be held accountable. And don’t get me started on Paul Robinson, possibly the worst keeper in the Premier League. If Barry can’t get in on the left, I believe that he has a chance of doing a better job than Robinson between the sticks.

  • its stupid why the FA picked him over Big Sam and Martin O’Neil.
O’Leary would of done a better job

  • Christo are you DOL in disguise or his PR manager? Either that or your medication needs sorting out.

  • Probably said tongue in cheek voiceoftheholte, but closer to the truth than is obvious at first read. Better late than never I suppose, but welcome to the party all the same Gareth. Ridiculous and outrageous that the most in form left sided player in the country has to enter the England squad via the back door. Well ridiculous and outrageous to everyone but McClown.

  • Just hope he didn’t have to enter McClaren’s back door to get in the squad if you know what I mean

  • Barry only got in because Jimmy Krankie is injured and he cant run with his mouth open like Phil Chuckle. As Mc******* doesn’t pick form players, all GB has to do is have a few bad games and he will be a regular.

  • The thing for mr is Barry has been brilliant for Villa this season playing left midfield, I’m not sure he will cut it at left back on the International stage.

  • McClaren has stated that he already knows his starting line up for Saturday, so we can all rest assured that we’ll be subject to the same old tired set of faces, several performing out of position, while others are quite obviously not up to the required standard. All water under the bridge now, but the FA really screwed up big time by not bringing in a manager from outside of the Sven era, allowing him to bring in his own backroom staff etc. As things stand right now, all we are getting, and indeed will ever get, is more of the boring dross that was served up during the Sven years. Not good enough. We’ll never progress to a team capable of performing with the best at the Euro Championships or World Cup Finals.
