Villa skipper Gareth Barry is aiming high as he looks to emulate and beat the 12 unbeaten run Villa managed under John Gregory at the start of the 1998/99 campaign.

The 25-year-old left sided midfielder (hint hint McClaren) and left back told the official site:

‘I’d heard Everton had lost after Saturday’s game to leave us as the only unbeaten team and it’s been a brilliant start. If people had said at the start of the season we would have been the last unbeaten team, it would have been hard to believe especially with the away fixtures facing us at Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea.’

‘That was an unbelievable start we had under John Gregory a few years back and, although we are not top of the league like we were then, we are still collecting the points. Can we beat the record? It’s a tough ask. There are so many tough teams. The confidence is there and we don’t roll over now so it is possible. It is maybe a mini target for us to achieve but in between we want to pick up as many points as possible.’
