Gareth Barry back as Villa captain in the absence of Martin Laursen says his relationship with Martin O’Neill is ‘very good’ and that he never wanted to cause trouble last summer due to the respect he has for Aston Villa.

Barry, who is back in sparkling form following the season long tug-of-war with Liverpool over a possible transfer said to Sky:

‘I said straight away that myself and the manager are both professional people who want the best this season for Villa. The relationship is very good. It can go through your head what others have done to get away from a club – but it was just not the reputation I would have wanted. It never went through my head to go through that. I’ve got too much respect for the club, and for the manager, and I’ve just got on with the job.’

He also says how much he enjoys being captain saying it does give him an ‘extra lift’. ‘It can raise your game. But Martin is the captain this season and, if we win a trophy, that will be more than enough.’

The press have already started mumbling on about this summer and his possible exit but with luck and a prevailing wind this season so far has shown Gareth that he can win things whilst at Villa. I’m sure finishing in the top four and lifting the FA Cup will be enough to sign a new contract at Villa Park!?
