Gareth Barry told Sky Sports that he was surprised to have been put at left back in the 0-0 draw v Portsmouth on Saturday but says he’ll play wherever he is asked.

In a baffling move one of our most creative midfielders found himself in defence, after the game he said:

‘I was a bit surprised when the manager read the team. I’m not a player who enjoys players running at me too much when I play in defence, I try to enjoy going forward and I hope the manager appreciates that. He had a brief chat with me before the game and said it wasn’t a long-term thing, but I know he changes his mind, so I’m going to have to take that with a pinch of salt.’

Adding, ‘But I’ve never been one to moan too much and I’m not going to start now.’

OUCH? That looks like a bit of a dig doesn’t it? All not totally well still I guess, after all under successive managers he has been moved from pillar to post and that affected his game, since MON came in he looked to have a more settled role in midfield which has led to more England call ups. So I’m sure he won’t be thrilled going back to left back!?

What do you think? Is this the way we are going to convince Barry his future lies at Aston Villa?
