Gareth Barry has told the Sunday Mercury that the Villa are strong mentally and have their sights firmly set on a Champions League place.

Who knows, with the right injection of skill this January, we could be looking at above 4th as well, it might seem unlikely but why not, we are in the mix points wise and no team has got a runaway lead at this stage. There again, the second half of the season often sorts the boys from the men, or is it the men from the boys, not sure! Especially with injuries and suspensions usually kicking in.

Barry said: ‘The aim is to try to get that fourth spot, but we have got to be realistic about it. It is going to be hard to achieve that. We are going to need strong players and a strong mentality. I think we are getting that as we are not always playing well, but the results are there and that is down to a strong mentality.’

Adding ‘The belief that we can win is growing – no matter where we are playing.’

He also says they don’t fear anyone now and know they can ‘grind out’ results.

And on a top four finish he told the local paper: ‘I think we’ve never had a better chance. Certainly, with the type of players we have here, I think we can achieve it.’

And most excitingly – and perhaps he’ll have less of a wonderlust because of this – he says the club is ‘going forward all the time.’

Lets cement that with a top striker this month eh?!?!
