According to Martin O’Neill yellow cards and match suspensions are an ‘occupational hazard’ for players like Gavin McCann who will have to sit out the weekends televised game against Wigan on Sunday due to being a very naughty boy. I’ve been unable to get it confirmed but I believe McCann will remain at Villa Park writing lines as punishment.

O’Neill said: ‘Considering he missed a couple of games through injury, he picks bookings up pretty regularly, doesn’t he? He got one after about three minutes on Saturday with his first challenge! It is an occupational hazard. The problem is that then you are on your guard for 87 minutes of the match. I certainly wouldn’t want to curb his desire. But people have to be careful; you can pick up bookings for anything these days.’

O’Neill also said that Olof Mellberg’s yellow card at Goodison park was a ‘poor decision’.
