Shay Given is contemplating whether to call time on his international career after the Republic of Ireland’s lacklustre Euro campaign.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the bitter disappointment of Eire’s no show against Spain, our keeper admitted that he knew he had a decision to make, but he would hold off on it whilst he was hurting:

‘I think it might be time to step aside and let somebody else come into the side. It’s all a bit raw at the moment because we’ve lost an important game but at some point I’m going to have to make a decision.’

Will Italy be his last game for the Emerald Isle? It’s an international career he can be proud of if he ends it on 125 caps, but he also has to consider his club career and the additional stresses maintaining an international obligation can bring to somebody of his elder status.
