Weren’t we all a little happier at the fulltime whistle in last night’s victory at the KCOM Stadium over Hull City.

With some old concerns coming out ahead of the game when fans saw the first team sheet for the year, Hull taking the lead seven minutes into the match certainly didn’t help our summer frayed spirits, but then we sort of remembered how to play football.

Tommy Elphick celebrated his return to the side by getting us back on level terms and Ahmed Elmohamady gave us the lead with 20 minutes remaining. The Scottish Cafu finished the night off for us, with a Lionel Messi like dribble before hitting the back of the net to give is an opening day 3-1 win.

Now, it wasn’t a great performance and we can all pick out issues, but it wasn’t as bad as many thought it might be. There were signs of improvement and things coming together – even if the main one was we didn’t fold when we conceded which remained prevalent last year despite where we finished.

That confidence and depression from our relegation campaign seems completely gone so now it’s over to manager Steve Bruce and the players to improve further in an attacking philosophy.

It’s only one game, it’ll decide nothing but the outlook always looks brighter after three points.

One man clearly takes the headlines from the game though.
