With plenty of Aston Villa fans debating the relative merits of Ahmed Elmohamady and whether or not it’s time for us to see what Fred Guilbert can do, head coach Dean Smith gave his answer earlier today as the Official Site confirmed that the 31-year-old had now signed a new 12 month extension.

Having joined from Hull City back in the summer of 2017, the Egyptian international has now made 75 starting appearances for us, and more than played his part in the fabulous run of victories we had in the second half of last season as we secured promotion back to the top flight via the Play-Off spots.

With his contract going into his final 12 months, he is now contracted up until the summer of 2021.

Reflecting on his time with us so far as he penned his new deal, Elmo said.

“I am absolutely delighted to extend my contract. Playing for Aston Villa is unbelievable. It’s a great club and the fans are unbelievable. I am looking forward to continuing my stay here. The Championship is the most difficult league in the world to get out of. But we had a successful year. We want another now. It’s been a difficult start. I think we played really well in the last two games. But sometimes we are unlucky with some mistakes. But if we continue playing well the luck will come.”

Reaction was predictably mixed, but given Elmo’s overall attitude at the club, from a continuity point of view, he’s a good lad (with experience) to have around the dressing room even if game time does become a question when Guilbert gets his chance.

I think most tend to appreciate that, as we continue to adjust and our newbies settle in.
