Aston Villa’s opening weekend clash with Liverpool will be the first Premier League clash ever screened by Setanta.

The upcoming season marks the first time that Sky have lost their monopoly over top-level league fixtures since the Premier League was created in 1992, thanks to the much-derided European Commission.

The clash with Liverpool, who finished third behind Chelsea and champions Manchester United last season, was originally scheduled to kick-off at 3pm on Saturday, August 11 at Villa Park, but will now instead take place at 5.15pm instead.

While some fans will complain a further watering down of the traditional 3pm kick-offs on Saturday, those watching the action from afar will have a good chance to watch Martin O’Neill’s players launch their attack on a European place – between the start of the season and the end of November, Villa will be shown live four times on Sky and four times on Setanta.

One of those games is the trip to city ‘rivals’ Birmingham on November 11 and while last season’s top-four have been favoured by the television executives yet again, the new deal does seem to offer a glimpse of some light at the end of the tunnel.

Whatever happens on August 11, hopefully Villa Park will be full so that those watching at home will know that we are serious about challenging for honours. And a win against Liverpool would go some way to convincing others that we could qualify for the Champions League – though the UEFA Cup would be fine this season!

  • Dont think that the change to 5.15 is that bad, it could have been worse could have been Sunday !!! lots of drinkin time beforehand

  • I think opening day of the season all matches should be played at the same time on the same day.

  • Beravill!!! It is Sunday!!!! and i agree with Deano, first Saturday all games should kick off at same time, as they do on last day of season! UTV

  • Its SATURDAY

Saturday 11: 12.45pm: Sunderland v Tottenham Hotspur (Sky). 5.15pm: Aston Villa v Liverpool (Setanta).

  • The first game Setanta ever showed was Villa vs Southampton on the first day of the 04-05 season.

  • Not to bad a 5-15 kick off, jus tell the missus its a 12-30 kick off and get all the drinking time in you can !

  • I love 5.15 on Saturdays. You can get in the boozer earlier. You watch all the up to the minute scores from Sky on the big screens and really get a sense of anticipation for the game. To top it all off, you come out of the ground straight in to Saturday night entertainment. Personally I prefer the 5.15 kick offs to 3pm, although I fully undersatand that not everybody does. Also what a great opening day it should be for the Holte Hotel. Unfortunately I am on my jolidays for the Redscouse game so someone else will be having all my S T’s. No doubt a bar in Rhodes will have the game on.

  • You should be happy they moved the kick off time, it gives you a stay of execution for a couple of hours. I don’t really mind what time we beat you.

  • We can moan and complain all we like, and I certainly do, but we’d better get ourselves used to it once again. It effects me more with the away games than it does with the Villa Park fixtures, but whatever the kick off time, I know full well that I’ll be there, so I just get on with it.

  • I will be just just glad the season is back…I have been going mad. There is only so much football manager and Fifa you can play. The Copa America has been ****.Here, here on getting to the boozer early and getting well oiled..Tenners at the ready” And you’ll neeever work again, youu’llll nevver work agaaiinnn”
