Both Martin O’Neill and Randy Lerner watched Aston Villa reserves come back from 2 down to beat West Ham at Upton Park last night.

Chris Sutton made his debut in the Claret and Blue and managed 72 minutes in his quest to gain match fitness.

Christian Kabeya pulled a goal back just before half time to make it 2-1, Craig Gardner scored from the penalty spot to put us on level terms and young striker Adam McGurk sealed the victory.
Gary Cahill made a winning return from injury and both Wilfred Bouma and Patrik Berger also played.

VILLA: Olejnik, Bridges, Green, Cahill, Bouma, Osbourne, Agathe, Gardner, Sutton, Kabeya, Berger. Subs: Lund (for Sutton 74), Henderson, McGurk (for Kabeya 63), Stieber (for Berger 82).

On the subject of Chris Sutton Martin O’Neill told the official site:

‘Taking Chris Sutton on doesn’t mean he’ll step straight in the side. I know Chris Sutton will come here thinking he’ll step straight in the team. He’ll say ‘I’ll bide my time’ or whatever, but they all want to play and if he’s fit enough, he’ll want to be in the team. He was troubled by the groin for most of the time when he went down to Birmingham in the latter stages of last season. I think he started off brightly but I think the injury occurred and he wasn’t right.’

  • What’s happened to the young promising striker Paul? (I think that his first name was Shane…poor lad!)

He was a regular in the stiffs last season. Is he out on loan?

  • He was released and is at one of the basement clubs now. Very surprised by this I was. Have a look on soccerbase.com.

  • Listening to the broadcast last night, Cahill played well, “never put a foot wrong” according to Jack Woodward. Adam McGurk is also another player we’ll soon be seeing playing in the senior squad. Gardner took his penalty well – perhaps should give Angel

  • Adam Mcgurk ? How many consecutive reserve games has he scored in ? I believe it is 4 now ! we’ll be seeing him in the first team soon.

  • Hammering the ‘Ammers. Always an enjoyable experience, no matter what the level. Yes jaspervilla, young Adam McGurk really looks the real deal. A very promising and talented youngster.
