The 1975 Football League Cup Final took place on 1 March 1975 at the old Wembley Stadium. It was contested between Aston Villa and Norwich City. To date it is the only time a major domestic Cup Final that has been played at Wembley Stadium between two clubs where neither were then currently in top-flight football. Aston Villa won 1-0, to claim their 2nd League Cup final victory. Ray Graydon scored the only goal of the game, following up after Kevin Keelan had saved a penalty onto the post.
Attendance: 95,946
The Aston Villa team on that Cup Final day was as follows:
Cumbes
Robson
Aitken
Ross
Nicholl
McDonald
Graydon
Little (B)
Leonard
Hamilton
Carrodus
Sub: Evans (Alun)
Manager: Ron Saunders.
The Aston Villa Manager Ron Saunders surrounded by Villa fans pledged ‘I’ll take the Villa into Europe next season as a First Division Club’
If I remember rightly this was Ron Saunders third League Cup final in three years having been on the losing side with Man City and Norwich on the previous two occasions.
