At some point yesterday (it was a long day!), Aston Villa confirmed that John Terry has penned a new contract extension keeping him at Bodymoor Heath until the summer of 2021.

Our former skipper had been heavily linked on the rumour mill with the Middlesborough job (Ha Steve Gibson) and in more recent days as Frank Lampard’s potential successor at Derby County should Lampard make his own rumoured move to Stamford Bridge as Maurizio Sarri’s replacement.

Hopefully the confirmation from the club yesterday will put an end to the pointless speculation doing the rounds in the red tops, but somehow I doubt it.

Head coach Dean Smith seemed very happy with his contribution last season as we overcame promotion pain and booked our place back in the Premier League via the Wembley Play-Off route.

“I am really pleased that JT has extended his current deal as he is a pleasure to work with. We have had a successful start to our Villa coaching careers and JT has been instrumental in joining myself, Richard O’Kelly and Neil Cutler. He has complimented the team that we have and I have no doubts he will go on to be a top manager in the years to come. Our focus now is on the coming season and to try to continue the progress we have had in the past eight months.”

Terry was also sticking true to his own words about wanting to learn first before taking his inevitable leap into the hot seat in his own right.

“I’m delighted that I have extended my contract at Aston Villa Football Club. I’m very thankful to the club and to the gaffer, Dean Smith for giving me the opportunity to work with him and learn from him day-in, day-out. I’m also very thankful for all the players and the staff and, of course, the supporters for last season. What a great season it was which ended in promotion at Wembley. However, the hard work starts again now. We’re back in the Premier League where we belong.”

Fans understandably were also pretty pleased with the news – so the big question, who or what next?
