“He Didn’t Produce” – Grealish Slams Colleagues Set Piece Effort But With A Smile On His Face

|

Aston Villa summer signing Matt Targett has had a mixed start to life at the club following his £15million switch from Southampton, but with his injury issues seeming to be behind him now, he’s definitely begun impressing fans with his attacking play – and he, of course, played a key role in our victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend, as he hit the winner.

He didn’t have the game of his life though and fans are looking for improvement on a defensive front, and many picked out his free-kick late on in the game that sailed well over the bar, as something else that he can definitely improve on.

Speaking to AVTV following the hard-fought 2-1 victory, Jack Grealish couldn’t resist mentioning the free-kick and ribbing his colleague a little bit for the failed attempt.

“He didn’t produce with the free-kick five minutes before. We got in a huddle and said, ‘who fancies it?’ Targett, he wanted it. I don’t know where it went. I think it went out of the stadium. At least he got his left-foot on that one on the end and got us the winner. I know how hard he works. When he came here, it probably didn’t go the way he planned. He didn’t really start the first six or seven games. Since he came in he has been brilliant and long may it continue.”

The goal, and winning in that fashion, should do Targett’s confidence the world of good really and it should help him settle further in and really begin replicating the form that we saw at Southampton and during his loan spell with Fulham.
