Brian ‘he who walks on water’ Little has spoken with Setanta Sports in an exclusive interview saying that 4th is not the be all and end all for Villa this season because Villa are improving.

The former Villa legend and manager told Sultana that there are a number of reasons for Villa being leapfrogged (hey, honestly, no pun was intended there!) by Arsenal.

He points to the great form of Arsenal and the fact they’ve had key players returning whilst we’ve had a big loss in Martin Laursen.

‘The loss of key players at a crucial stage of the season has really hurt them and the absence of Laursen in particular has been noticeable as he is a giant at the back for them. I don’t think Villa really expected to be in the top four this season, but Martin would have thought that they would go close.’

He also says that despite the fact we might not now finish fourth (the race is still on, Arsenal have some very tough games yet to face!) there is clear improvement at Villa and all we need to do now is to increase numbers… how often have we heard that one!?

Not the most interesting snippet I grant you but then again, news is slow on the ground at the moment and it is always nice to mention Sir Brian, a true Villa gent.

  • Another reason I hope Villa return to winning ways is so that you can go and crawl back under your rock ’48. Good result for your lot against Wolves the other night.

  • Aah bless – avfc is sulking because he thought HE was the one who walked on water …

  • No no Yatesy, there is no need for that. 48 knows more about football than he who walks on water, so we must all believe him. let me just weigh this up!!! I wonder who knows most about football?? Lord Brian, one of our greatest ever players and as a manager, a man who led us to 4th, a League cup Win and an FA Cup semi Final in the same year? Or 48? The man who used to be a regular supporter of the club, but who because of his own circumstances, very rarely watches the team any more?? This is also the man who complained that we got M’ON because his own preference was Klinnsman. Tough one that? And that is not getting personal, because if 48 can be facetious so can I. Lets all just symathise with him and let him live in his world. AAhhh, the poor man. It is a shame. He tries his best. Probably the saddest thing is that I understand him to be a very responsible guy, who actually puts massive amounts in to the lives of lots of people. As such, stupidity is probably not the reason for his comments.

  • Guys, stop being personal against other users or I’ll start deleting comments. Just argue the points not the poster please and if you don’t like someone, ignore the beggers! Lets allow all to have their views no matter how wrong you think they are.

  • Brian Little – what a player and manager xxxx

Laursen has been missed as much as we all feared, if only MON could have bought a player as good in the last 3 years, ah well.

  • Who’d have thought that at the start of the season , Arsenal would start to play well at some point and Villa’s small squad would struggle without one of our 3 best players?

Come back Sir Brian all is forgotten !

  • True mate, DOL bought a diamond in him, wonder if he`d have bought more with the cash MON has had ?? Good debate…

  • Well said Mr Magic. I can take pride in the fact that our Bri is echoing comments I have stated throughout the campaign. Finishing outside of the top four is far, far, far from failure from this developing and progressing Villa team. Realistically it was never going to happen for us this season, we are not yet the finished article, but we’re most certainly getting there. We dont have squad strenth in depth or the quality that the ‘big four’ possess, hence the reason I never believed we were right in sending out weakened teams in the UEFA and domestic cups. Apart though from that beef, I’ve been more than happy with our results throughout the season. There’s plenty of positives out there, and you dont have to look too far to see them.

  • Slightly off topic here, but I cant let the opportunity pass I’m afraid. All of you ‘older’ supporters out there, can you recall (I know you can) Brian’s superb hat-trick at Highbury against Queens Park Rangers in the League Cup semi-final replay of 76-77? What a night of celebration that was. What an exciting Villa team that was. Right, back on topic now.
