Paul Lambert has said that healthy competition for places next season will help push the squad on and help improve everybody to give stronger performances.

Speaking to the Official Site Lambert said he believed that his recent early signings will play their part in bringing out stronger and more consistent performances from the rest of the squad when we begin our second campaign under his leadership.

‘Having genuine competition for places is really healthy and, in fact, vital for any club that aspires to bigger and better things. For instance, Antonio Luna has come in and he will augment and enhance the defence and give us some more options there.’

Lambert says that everybody knows we need to improve defensively and Luna will help achieve that having played 70 odd games in Spain, as he references the quality of La Liga and the different experiences he can bring with him, to help ’round’ the other defenders we have.

He also says we didn’t really have much competition for places last season, and whilst some will disagree and point to the players he didn’t use, I think a better line would be to say we didn’t have competition for the way he wanted us to play with various other players at the club not being of the style he prefers.

Rightly he also comments that having the new signings in from the first day, will help them adjust, adapt and gel with their team mates far quicker than if they’d have been brought in at the last minute, so he’s hoping come the opening weekend we can hit the ground running.

‘Everybody’s looking forward to it, not least our fans who were terrific and steadfast in their support last season and it will be great to give them something to shout about when the campaign gets under way.’
