Midfielder Lee Hendrie could move to former team-mate Gareth Southgate’s Middlesbrough after finding himself without a club.

The 30-year-old’s contract recently expired and was not renewed, bringing down the curtain on a 14-year association with the club. But despite spending a large chunk of last season on loan at Stoke, eight clubs have reportedly already contracted Hendrie to register their interest.

But Middlesbrough appear to be leading the way in the race for his signature, though a a free-agent Hendrie can take his time before making a considered decision.

Hendrie told BBC Sport: ‘I know boss Gareth Southgate well, it would be very tempting. I hope to get a deal done with someone soon.’

Although the player has his detractors among Villa fans, with many frustrated that he never managed to fulfil his obvious potential while wearing the claret and blue, he could still have something to offer in the Premier League – albeit with a club seemingly heading in the opposite direction to Villa.

Martin O’Neill won’t worry about not being able to select Hendrie next season, as the club are moving onwards and upwards, but after spending such a long time at Villa Park it’s interesting to try and imagine where the club will be 14 years from now, and whether the then 44-year-old former player will be cheering from the stands…
