Well who would’ve thunk it, the much maligned (rightly at points) Emile of the Heskey won us the game last night…now if he could play like that every week!

As somebody who suffered mixed fortunes under O’Neill’s rotation policy, it sounds like Houllier’s ‘everybody is involved’ outlook to a playing staff has excited our former England forward and it’s certainly been a long time since we saw a performance of that stature from him. Had he done that more often maybe O’Neill’s rotation policy may have suited him?

Speaking on the Official Site following his Man of the Match second half performance Heskey said:

‘You come into a game and you’re looking to make an impact – it was nice to have that impact.’

Impact is one way of describing it, grabbing our equiliser with a sublime left footed finish and then having a hand in the next two goals – including the fantastically weighted pass to Ash – is a hell of a way to make an ‘impact’.

‘The manager told us it’s not just the XI on the park, it’s the subs too and the lads in the stands as well. Everyone is part of it and we need everyone focused on the same goal. That’s what we’re doing and that’s what I managed, which was great.’

As for the goals themselves, Heskey is reasonably understated about the class of his finish in saying:

‘When you get time like that, it’s a bit more difficult, but I managed to get it out of my feet nice and early and drill it home. The goal gave us that little boost.’

He however is so understated in praising Ashley Young for his brace.

‘I thought Ash was brilliant all game and he got his two goals, which he thoroughly deserved. He doesn’t get many headers, but he’s a brave lad. It was nice to turn creator for the third – I put it on a plate for him!’

Heskey finishes by saying the whole playing staff would adore another Cup run and it’s certainly what they intend to do this season. Silverware has been a long time coming and it’s something they intend to change.
