Celtic forward Shaun Maloney, who has been linked several times to Aston Villa, has called off contract talks until January according to the Hoops chief executive Peter Lawwell.

Maloney becomes a free agent in the summer and is able to talk to other clubs and sign pre-contract agreements in January.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked to the young hot shot.

Lawwell said: ‘Despite making serious and persistent efforts to continue negotiations, Shaun’s representatives have indicated they wish to suspend discussions until January when Shaun will have the opportunity to look at options.’

‘It would seem the reason for this is not financial. This development is worrying. However, it should be clearly stated that Celtic are very keen to bring this matter to a successful conclusion. That would be one which sees Shaun extend his contract with the club.’

Meanwhile Top Sport are suggesting that Villa might be looking to loan Svetoslav Todorov from Portsmouth in January.

Todorov is currently on loan at Wigan but that deals run out on December 31st. The report suggests Todorov would be a great short term answer for our striker shortage.

Not sure about this one, are we that short? Baros, Angel, Sutton, Agbonlahor and Moore when he returns?

  • Baros is an enigma. He is clearly very talented but how do you motivate the man? If he is firing on all cylinders then he would be an asset to any team in the country. But what makes him tick? If MON cannot make play to his potential (and he is the

  • I agree dougie baros looked very good in some games last season and shoved two past the scum, give him till the end of the season. Why sell in jan we got Randy now not ellis the parasite.

  • baros and angel are both the sort of players who need the chances set up properly, as we don’t set them up, they will often look average, give them the through balls or crosses and I’m sure they’d feed off them all day.

  • Vital Celtic ed here – well, he won last season’s Scottish Player of the Year award AND the Scottish Young Player of the Year award. It seems odd, though, as O’Neill didn’t really play him that much – Strachan has been the one who has nurtured him. If he

  • There will no doubt be a few interested clubs interested in talking to him (Maloney) in January. Hopefully the O’Neill/Petrov connection might swing the deal our way, but the player will have several options to consider.
