We’ve won a Cup, we have some silverware…am I dreaming? Joe Bennett scored, I must be!
Much earlier this morning Aston Villa achieved the unthinkable, in a Cup competition we didn’t lose to lower league opponents and we come home with a piece of silverware to show for our efforts.
Who cares about record losing streaks and those horrors on a morning like this eh!
In the game against Houston Dynamo, left back Joe Bennett scored his first goal for Villa in the final throes of the first half as he used his head to connect with an Andi Weimann delivery.
This was another game I didn’t see given the kick off time, but I did watch the first 20 minutes and my educated, balanced view of our play was ‘meh’.
The Official Site carries a full match report, and it also says that the victory was ‘well deserved’ and ‘could have been more convincing’ so I’m assuming after the opening 20 minutes we did improve and have a number of decent opportunities.
In fact the OS lists good chances as falling to Karim El Ahmadi, Darren Bent, wonderboy Alan Hutton and Gary Gardner especially.
The one nil win saw us hoist aloft ‘The Charities Cup’ which was nice.
Villa first half:
Steer, Herd, Senderos, Baker, Lowton, Bennett, El Ahmadi, Delph (Richardson 30), N’Zogbia, Agbonlahor, Weimann.
Villa second half:
Steer, Hutton, Richardson, Herd, Clark, Stephens, Gardner, Westwood, Bacuna, Grealish, Bent.
The early substitution of Fabian Delph was precautionary apparently.
