There has been some frightening speculation on the Aston Villa rumour mill this summer that we had an interest in former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.

The original report came from The Sun earlier this month so I think most were happy to ignore it as despite his early promise at Manchester City and Chelsea, the 29-year-old is just one of those players that for many flatters to deceive – although fair’s fair, his goals to games ratio at Liverpool is very good indeed.

With only four goals last year though and injuries seeming to regularly hit him, it’s no surprise he’s now a free agent, but he’s just not a player we should be looking at and moreover, he doesn’t fit the profile of the player that we are now on the hunt for.

The Sunday People (P51 14/7) have now linked him with a move to Serie A side Bologna and I can’t be alone in hoping that rumour comes true, simply so we stop mentioning him in the same breath as Villa Park.

I try and ignore most speculation at this time of year, but after the last few years at Villa this one scares me.
