Whilst most Aston Villa fans are preoccupied with the transfer window as we prepare for a second season back in the top flight, the club are also celebrating the 40th anniversary of our title winning success back in 1980/81.

Taking the First Division trophy for the seventh time in our history, it also led to a rather remarkable European adventure and a shin going down in history.

On the back of JF’s piece at the beginning of the week Heady Days – 40 Years & We Still Love You, Salute You, Thank You, as you can imagine, it led to plenty of memories and posts in the Vital Villa Forum and a little poem from starchild65 stood out as deserving of a wider audience.

So here it is.

In honour of 40 years on….

I still remember it like it was just yesterday
40 years on from the trail that they blazed
Paisley, Clough, Robson and all of the rest
Had to fight it out for second best

When we were the best in the land
Soldiers under Saunders’ command
Bedecked and proud in my claret and blue
Villa – a team the whole world knew

Me walking proud as Villa marched onward
English title winners then Europe was conquered
The class of 82 stormed into Rotterdam
The mighty Bayern Munich stood before them

From Rimmer in goal to young forward Shaw
Their names immortalised into Villa folklore
Our lion will return one day and roar out loud
To a vibrant and rocking Villa Park crowd

The bells will ring out once more for the claret and blue
And all our hopes and dreams will again come true
Triumph and tragedy we have seen more than our share
Oh to see glory return and say “I was there”
