With fans torn on John Terry and those concerns being largely irrelevant as he’s now completed (or soon will) a deal with Russian side Spartak Moscow, Aston Villa have also been linked in recent times with a move for former player James Collins.

It was the weekend and new speculation was required to feed the masses and the Mirror duly obliged and went back into the archives for rumours linking us with a move for former Leicester City title winner Robert Huth.

As if by magic, manager Steve Bruce has now turned his attentions to the 34-year-old German, and they suggested that a deal would be done for him before the end of this evening.

I have no idea if there’s any truth to this, Huth isn’t new on the rumour mill is he. If nothing is announced by 8pm though expect well placed ‘sources’ to link us with a return for Carlos Cuellar as he’s without a club at the moment and looking for a new deal as well.

The debate about the decision to let Tommy Elphick leave isn’t going to go away soon as even if Huth arrives and is maybe followed by Collins, we are still woefully short at centre-half in my humble.

  • I don’t think having Huth & Collins in our squad till January, with an offer to extend the contract to the end of the season if they perform well, is a bad thing.
They have bags of experience which we need desperately in that position.
It would take the pressure of Chester even maybe Bruce till Christmas.

  • Just put Axel in at CB. If we aren’t planning to use him there I see no point in bringing him here. RB is probably our most well covered position. My worry with Huth would be that he missed all of last season through injury and hasnt played competitive football since May 2017.

  • Never mind Huth Collins or Terry, what about the young lad we bought off Bury in January Bedau I think his name is, plays regular for the u23 looks a good prospect to me. But then again I suppose as long as Bruce is here he won’t get a look in.

  • Yes Bedeau and Suliman have had good reports, although I know the latter is currently on loan.

The problem is Bruce has no faith in blooding youth, unless all his other options are exhausted. On a broader line, he has pretty much written off half the squad, as he strives to upgrade with loanees.

Deep down, I think it is a reflection of his own insecurity. He is frightened of losing what is likely to be his last big opportunity in football. I can understand this, but think it is likely to backfire on him in the end.
