Aston Villa’s Icelandic midfielder Birkir Bjarnason didn’t have the best of campaigns in the 2018/19 season. The 31-year-old international only made 11 starting appearances (two goals) with six further showings from the substitutes bench and in the second half of the campaign we only saw him a handful of times as we went on our record breaking winning streak to ultimately secure Play-Off promotion back to the Premier League.
Villa Fan Gives His Thoughts On Minnesota Friendly As We Get Our First Look At Smith’s New Signings
With the recent training camp and friendly with Minnesota out in the United States, Bjarny got a run out in the second half and he even got himself on the scoresheet, putting in a decent display in my humble, so he’s certainly done himself no harm ahead of the coming 2019/20 campaign if he can keep that up.
With some thinking (well, I can’t have been alone) that Bjarnason may be one of the players we looked to move on this summer, plenty of fans on the back of that performance are backing him to get a second lease of life under head coach Dean Smith now.

I know it was a preseason game against Minnesota United but Birkir Bjarnason was one of the stand out players for sure!
He looked as good as he was in that purple patch when Steve Bruce was using him as a holding midfielder and was a revelation! ???? #avfc pic.twitter.com/6vl6f59UgB

Deserves a go in the squad based on international form, last night shouldn't be used as a judge of player quality though. Was a friendly against a 2nd string MLS side after all. Close to a league 2 match standard most likely.

Bjarnason and Lansbury both looked sharp when they came on yesterday I must say. Jota impressed enall.
