Aston Villa’s defeat to Fulham in the Championship Play-Off Final at Wembley has given rise to plenty of emotions.

  • Anger
  • Disappointment
  • Disillusionment
  • Doubt
  • Debate over the futures of everyone

But it’s also filled a few people with hope, and Melon Donkey is one of those.

It’s no secret that plenty of fans have spoken about enjoying our Championship campaign more owing to the fact that the games are tighter, it’s a genuine battle and in reality the best side to turn up on the day is more than capable of beating everyone else when you compare it to the ‘competition’ aspects of the Sky favoured ‘top six’ and the money rules everything attitude in the top-flight.

Problem is, whilst Aston Villa fans have enjoyed visiting or re-visiting new/old grounds the past couple of seasons, today’s game is about the money and that’s only available in the Premier League.

I’ll let Melon take over…

Saturday’s events are gone as far as I’m concerned. It still hurts when I suddenly think of what should have been. But we have to move on, right now.

Am I harsh in saying we are all a bit woe is us? Probably.

I’m bored of the Financial Fair Play talk. I don’t understand it in truth but I am too drained and bored of will he (Steve Bruce) stay, will he go, what about the kids, we need to keep him, sell him… it’s only been 3/4 days already.

Let’s be honest – two years into EFL hell…actually it’s quite enjoyable and we have been spoiled. By that I mean getting in the likes of John Terry, Robert Snodgrass, Jonathan Kodjia, Ahmed Elmohamady, seasoned, very good pro’s, in one case exceptional – taking frivolous punts on Scott Hogan and Conor Hourihane.

Well that’s gone now. So why do we need to stop feeling sorry for ourselves?

For that we need to look at Cardiff, Fulham, Brighton, Huddersfield. Teams who haven’t had our parachute luxuries. Who have built teams (probably not Cardiff) over time. Stuck with a manager despite failing to begin with.

David Wagner and Fulham’s manager whose name I can’t spell come straight to mind with Play-Off failures.

Slavisa Jokanovic – Ed.

They have not gone spend spend, big name big name and they have done it. Got promoted. May have taken two or three years in getting a team, the right blend but they did it and haven’t spent big bucks.

This is what we need to do. It can be done but only through good management and player recruitment from top to bottom and patience. Let’s be honest what we have tried to do is a sticking plaster approach.

We had a huge job to get this current team into a Premier League team capable of competing. It’s actually quite scary thinking that this team would have to play Manchester City! Of course financially it was a no brainer but team wise?. Mmmmm.

Over to you then Villa. Like I said plenty have done it through sound and sensible recruitment, management and patience. Without spending the big cash.

It could happen when we least expect it. Ask Cardiff fans.
