Is McLeish’s Luck Running Out?

When our ‘manager’ bemoaned his luck yesterday, most of us could not believe our ears.

His claims that we have lost many points this season through bad luck beggars belief. Indeed, I consider that the early season form included a number of games where we scraped lucky points. He has also been very lucky with injuries.

Yes we have had the odd player injured from time to time, but up until recently no established first team player had been out for a significant number of games. (Jermaine Jenas was hardly established and with his injury record, his loss was predictable).

He has also been lucky that Gabby’s injury has coincided with Robbie Keane’s loan spell.

However his luck would now appear to be coming to and end. In the last 48 hours we have lost Ciaran Clark, and Richard Dunne, to what appear to be mid to long term injuries.

Having recently released Habib Beye, we are now left with just four experienced defenders, Hutton, Cuellar, Collins and Warnock. None of our other defenders have more than 10 Premiership starts.

Whilst I believe that we have some promising young players capable of filling in at full-back, I am not so sure about the centre-back role. An injury or suspension to either Cuellar or Collins, would leave the squad’s lack of depth seriously exposed. Vital games coming up.

Get the worry beads out and start praying. There always seems to be on team that drops into the relegation zone late in the season, as one or more of the bottom clubs pulls off the Houdini act.

It as Birmingham City last season. Will McLeish make it a double?
