Is MON a Chess Player?

Looking at the latest bits and pieces of news dribbling through the press, a couple of thoughts hit me.

Thought Number 1 – Steve Gibson coming out and saying we’ve paid GBP 6m for Luke Young, only 1 year after we could have had him for GBP 2.5m. My thought was ‘are we getting desperate’?

It would certainly appear so at first glance – if we wanted him, why didn’t we take him last year? His comments seem to have indicated that we would have been his first choice. The only logical answer is that he wasn’t first choice.

Thought Number 2 – If he’s not our first choice, why get him now? Again, obvious answer is we’re only just over a week away from the start of the season, and it really wouldn’t be acceptable starting our 2nd season without a recognised RB.

But is there another reason? An article in the Mirror today stated Liverpool were struggling big time to raise the cash for the Barry transfer, and ‘He (Rafa) is hoping Villa will agree a deal to take Steve Finnan in part-exchange for Barry, meaning he will need to raise around £6.5m from the sale of players.’

So is this MON’s attempt to back the Spanish waiter into a corner – remove our need for Finnan, and hence make the only acceptable bid a 100% cash bid only….knowing that Liverpool can’t come up with the reddies? Only a thought, but it would certainly be an interesting move……checkmate Rafa?
