It Would Be A Shame To See Villa Man Leave After Proving Bruce Wrong

Birkir Bjarnason is “on the market” this summer according to the Birmingham Mail journalist Alex Dicken. The Icelandic international has been linked with a fair number of clubs in Italy and Germany, while the latest link is to Turkish club Trabzonspor.

Thor has definitely not been one of Steve Bruce’s favourites since arriving in January 2017. Having started his career at Villa Park poorly, he began to turn his fortunes around during his second season at the club.

With the ability to play a number of positions, the 30-year-old does offer us something different, and it would be sad to see him go after really forcing himself back into the club’s first-team plans.

Goals in big victories against Reading, Bristol City and Wolves showed a man getting to grips with the English game, and he adapted to both playing in the centre of midfield, and further upfield on the left-hand side of attack.

Bjarnason seems keen to stay at the club as well despite the financial problems. When asked about his future earlier this month, he stated he was “happy” at the club despite the frustrations of not always been picked.

However, the decision may be taken out of the player’s hands. The pressure to sell to balance the books means a number of players like our no.20 could have to be offloaded.

Tough decisions will have to be made, although I would much prefer us to offload the likes of Ross McCormack and Micah Richards if it were at all possible.

With things as they are, and with £40million to try and find from somewhere, Bjarnason could well be one of those sacrificed simply because, unlike some others in the squad, the Icelandic midfielder has many clubs interested in recruiting him.

Currently, we are in the position where we have to listen to offers for most of our players, and it seems there will be a number of bids on the table for the World Cup star.
