So far we’ve been linked to:

Goalkeeper: Matt Murray

Defenders: Richard Stearman, Greg Halford – Colchester, Phil Bardsley of Man Utd, Matthew Upson from Small Heath, Curtis Davies from West Bromwich Albion, Portsmouth right-back Andy Griffin, Oldham right-back Neil Eardley.

Midfielders: Joey Barton of Man City, James Milner of Newcastle, Shaun Wright-Phillips from Chelski, Zoltan Gera from WBA, Reading’s Kevin Doyle.

Strikers: David Nugent from Preston, Jermain Defoe and/or Robbie Keane from Spurs, Darren Bent from Charlton, Sean Maloney from Celtic, Freddy Eastwood from Southend, Kevin Davies from Bolton, Mark Viduka from Boro), Alan Smith from Manchester United, Craig Bellamy (old link from rumour thread), Peter Crouch from Liverpool, James Beattie from Everton.

Some decent links, lets see who we buy now! Use this sticky article for all the links and moves through January and I’ll try as ever to keep the news as up to date as possible as we make all these glorious signings!

  • Oh yes, forgot that one, us and Spurs, Arsenal, West Ham, Wigan, who else? Think the report said 8 Prem teams had enquired, thing is he said he wants to stay at Madrid and can run his contract down and leave in the summer as a free agent!

  • Thank god the transfer window has arrived! Saying that, we now have a month of people posting comments like “I’ve just seen SWP arrive at Villa Park” or “my mates dad’s brother’s neighbour has contacts within Villa and we are on the verge of sigining ….”
It’s going to be fun and games, that’s for sure!!

  • Dixon- My nans aunties sister in laws best friends next door neighbour has just seen Robbie Keane leaving Villa Park!!

  • my cat’s former owner sister best friend daughters best friend travels round Birmingham and she said she spoke to a footballer called Shawn Wright-Phillips and she saw David O Leary picking his next meal out of the trash

  • we need a right and left midfielder plus a strong striker who can finish….Gera, SWP and Bent would be awesome but i dont see any big signings this month

  • I think we’ll get one of two, not sure how big though. The summer is the time we will surely see most coming and some going though, that is when players become more available.

  • If everyone is correct and there are to be no big signings during January would Danny Murphy not be a good signing. I know he is not going to get many peoples pulses racing but an excellent experienced player available for peanuts, worth a shout?

  • We need to make sure we have enough cover to avoid a relegation scrap. Don’t forget the higher we finish the best chance we have of attracting talent. I agree it will be hard to attact quality but a few players are out of contract in the summer and will be sold now. Upson, Cook of QPR, Boa Morte, Sidwell. These are the ones I know about. Then of course SWP is on offer and players that have been touted to clubs we don’t know about. Like JF I feel a little impatient but perhaps we have to wait until the games are over during the next few days. UTV

  • Good shout for craig gordon – Danny Murphy – not sure if it could go the way Berger did. One big forward that we all forgotten – Emile Heskey – Six goals this season. I think he worked for MON before.

  • The biggest impact in terms of effectively being like new signings would simply be a fit Luke Moore, Mark Delaney, and Laurrson.

Left back then becomes the priority to restore GB to midfield. Luke Moore, Gabby and Vassell would have been an unorthodox troublesome threesome full of width and effort. I don’t want to sign a striker unless they are better than our current misfiring frontmen – and I’m not convinced anybody is available to Villa who falls into that category. Surprises from MON most welcome rather than Nugent, Beattie, Keane and co. Kevin Davies would be an MON style frontman who could do a job.

  • Pretty dull list if we’re looking to reach for the stars over the next 3 years. Has’nt anyone got any better suggestions. Keane, Bent, Crouch, SWW, Richardson, Brown and Smith (Man U). I would personally welcome any of these, but I’m sure there are many, many more that Martin is working on -let’s hope so anyway and wish him well.

  • I don’t think the big stars will yet come to villa. We aren’t that attractive propisition yet. What need is players who can steady the ship and get us into the top six. If this acheived hopefully the new board will fund further improvement – and then who knows.

I get the feeling if O Neil wants a big man up front – he isn’t neccesarily looking for a prolific goalscorer – hence the likes of Heskey, Harewood, Nugent – might catch his eye.
