Martin O’Neill is hopeful that James Milner will be back in contention for the Chelsea match this weekend.

Milner missed last nights UEFA Cup clash against CSKA with a thigh injury, but the club are hopeful he will be fit by the end of the week.

Speaking on the official site, O’Neill said:

‘We had an injury to James. He had a better chance of playing on Saturday by missing the UEFA Cup game.

‘James wants to play every game but I took the doctor’s advice and left him out.’

We all know Gardner stepped up and played well, but there was an obvious mis-balance in the team with Milner missing as Gardner prefers to attack through the middle rather than using the wings.

Even if he’s not fit enough to last 90 minutes, you can but hope he’ll be good for 45.
