John Carew who apparently (and by the evidence before my eyes it appears to be true) is bigger than me and you, is gunning for fifth place.

He said on the official site after the Hull win:

‘It was our first win in quite a long time and it was a bit nervous but we managed to see it through so it’s an amazing feeling. It’s also good to keep and clean sheet and winning the game is good for the whole team.’

Adding that Villa ‘deserve to be fifth’ following a this seasons efforts and he thinks Villa can hold on.

And as usual, he has a mention for the fans: ‘They’re always fantastic. It was amazing again today and it was the winning goal as well so it gives it extra good feeling. It was an amazing cross from Ashley – it was world class. I just had to put my foot on it.’

Martin O’Neill has also praised JC, especially after he told the player publicly earlier in the season he needed to find some consistency. In truth I think JC wasn’t far from the chop after Ajax and Moscow BUT he has done what he needed to do, got back to fitness, got stuck in and more importantly, he’s been scoring!

As JC said recently, he has missed 20 games this season through injury, maybe he’d have been nearer (or over?) the 20 mark by now if not for that?

Martin O’Neill said, again on the Official Site, said: ‘He’s thriving on the crowd’s terrific support.’ Adding he is delighted how well the big man is doing.

‘He seems to have had no reoccurrence of the back problem which plagued him midway through the season. He is now as fit as he’s been all season. He really is encouraged by the crowd’s reaction during games. He is very popular and that chant the fans sing rhymes very well. He is certainly bigger than me!’

And on the Hull game he said: ‘It is great to win again – it’s been a long time coming. We deserved to win the game and we kept a clean sheet for the first time in about five years so that was another positive. They could have got a goal at the end. We should have had the game dead and buried before then. But when we didn’t get the second, Hull were obviously going to go for it with nothing to lose. It was up to us to hold out – and we managed it.’
