John Carew has been having a good old talk recently, anyone would think the Norwegian striker is happy and enjoying his time at Villa. Top news!

He has spoken about Martin O’Neill as a manager saying: ‘Rafa (Benitez – the mini Tom Jones look alike!) was good, very professional, analytical and dedicated. Martin is a completely different manager. He is really close with the players. He’s quite tactical himself, but the most important thing in the manager here is he makes the players believe in themselves, their qualities and the tactical plan. He gets the players believing in what they do when they get out on the pitch. That’s what makes you successful. There are only five or six successful managers in Europe and Martin is one of them.’

Meanwhile in the Mirror the Hulk says that Everton could rue not killing us off having taken the lead twice at the weekend. ‘We have created a great opportunity to get into Europe,’ said striker Carew, who bagged his 13th goal of the season on Sunday. We have a real chance this weekend when we play Wigan, while Everton are away at Arsenal. We have great belief that we can still take fifth place. We both have tough matches ahead but we have a better goal difference.’

And on the official site he says the team spirit is what has brought the good times back to Villa this season. He said: ‘I’ve adapted successfully wherever I’ve been but this is the most competitive league. We depend a lot on team spirit at Villa. I have found it much better after being in teams that cruised to the league title. At Valencia and Lyon we were cruising through the first stage of the Champions League as well and sometimes that makes players drift off into their own little world. Not here.’

Adding, ‘We have to be together 100% all the way to get results, and when we play like that it’s a fantastic experience.’ He also says he has enjoyed the responsibility of being one of the more senior players. Bloody hell, he is only 28. All of a sudden I feel very old! ‘I want to help the young players here at Villa fulfil their potential and if I can do that I will be very happy.’
