It was being reported yesterday that Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was now expected to complete his loan move to Aston Villa imminently.

With Manchester United and Jose Mourinho considering including him in their pre season tour of the United States, that decision was made at the beginning of the week and Johnstone was left out of the squad that will make the trip and in doing so, that should mean that our deal for him moves a step closer.

Last weekend manager Steve Bruce was hopeful that we would have clarity in 24/48 hours and that took us through Monday’s announcement of the travelling squad and it does now appear it’s only a matter of time before he returns to B6.

With less than a year left on his existing deal at Old Trafford, whether the hold up now is a contract negotiation at the club before they allow him to depart remains to be seen, but with this rumbling on hopefully the 24 year old will now soon be tied down for the coming year and hopefully with a permanent deal in place for next summer as the very least United would be owed I guess is training compensation even if he is out of contract.

Sky Sports again say that sources state Johnstone is ‘enthusiastic’ about a return and with eight clean sheets in 22 appearances for us last season, he certainly left with more fans than he arrived with, so knowing the club now hopefully he could really kick on.

  • looks like he’s in an ideal position, get a loan, be a free agent, see if we are promoted.

  • Didn’t realise he’d be a free agent next summer, if true it could explain why United have taken so long to give an answer I guess.

  • Not that enthusiastic to arrive as yet :O) only I read this a few days ago and still we’re waiting ! Good young keeper mind, and one that could turn out to be a good stopper for the Villa now and in the future possibly. I’d like to see us go back now for
